How it works

  1. Add your video

Drop a video or an audio file, or choose it. It is read on your device and never uploaded.

  2. Generate the subtitles

Leave “Detect automatically” or choose the spoken language, then start. The subtitles appear as they’re written.

  3. Check and download

Watch the video with its new subtitles, then download them as SRT or VTT.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The sound is decoded and transcribed inside your browser, on your device. Only the speech model is downloaded, from this site, and your browser keeps it for next time.

What’s the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both contain the same timed lines. SRT is the most widely supported, by YouTube, video editors and media players such as VLC. VTT (WebVTT) is the format used by web video players.

How accurate are the subtitles?

Clear speech gives good results, but not perfect ones. Music, noise, accents, overlapping voices and names cause mistakes, and timings can be off by a moment. Watch the video with the subtitles before publishing, and fix the file in any subtitle editor if needed.

Can it translate the subtitles?

No. The subtitles are written in the language that is spoken in the video.

Are the subtitles burned into the video?

No. You get separate subtitle files, which you can add in YouTube, a video editor or a player. Viewers can then turn them on or off.

Which open-source components does it use?

The speech recognition is Whisper (base model), released by OpenAI under the MIT license, in its ONNX version by the ONNX Community. It runs with Transformers.js by Hugging Face (Apache-2.0 license) and ONNX Runtime Web by Microsoft (MIT license). Files your browser can’t decode itself are converted with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm), whose core is licensed under the GPL.
