Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is cut inside your browser with a WebAssembly version of FFmpeg. It stays on your device.
Does trimming reduce the quality?
Not by default: the selected part is copied as it is, without re-encoding, so the quality is identical and it’s very fast. Only the “Cut at the exact frame” option re-encodes the clip, at a high quality setting.
Why does my clip start a little before the time I chose?
Without re-encoding, a video can only start on a key frame, and these are often a few seconds apart. Tick “Cut at the exact frame” to start exactly where you want.
Can I remove a part in the middle?
This tool keeps one continuous part, from the start to the end you choose. To remove a middle section, trim the two parts separately.
What format is the trimmed video?
MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM videos keep their format. Other formats are saved as MKV. With exact cutting, the clip is always an MP4.
Which open-source software does this tool use?
It uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly by the ffmpeg.wasm project. Its core is licensed under the GPL, and its full source code is available from that project.
