Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The GIF is made inside your browser with a WebAssembly version of FFmpeg. Your video stays on your device.
Why is my GIF so large?
GIF is an old format that compresses video poorly. Size grows with the width, the number of frames per second and the length. For a lighter file, keep it short, use 320 or 480 pixels and 10 to 15 frames per second.
Why do the colors look slightly different?
A GIF can show only 256 colors. The tool builds the best palette for your clip and blends nearby shades, which keeps gradients smooth, but very colorful scenes lose some nuance.
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 30 seconds. Most GIFs shared online last a few seconds, which keeps them light and quick to load.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. The GIF format has no sound. To share a clip with sound, trim the video instead.
Which open-source software does this tool use?
It uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly by the ffmpeg.wasm project. Its core is licensed under the GPL, and its full source code is available from that project.
