Frequently asked questions
Why do images from websites download as WebP?
Many websites serve images in WebP because the files are smaller and pages load faster. Browsers show them fine, but some photo editors, printers and older apps still can’t open them.
Will I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?
A little, as with any re-encoding, but at the default quality of 85 it’s very hard to see. Raise the quality if you plan to edit or print the image.
What about transparent or animated WebP files?
Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, since JPG has no transparency. For animated WebP files, browsers decode only the first frame, so you get a still JPG.
Are my images uploaded?
No. WebP decoding and JPG encoding both run in your browser, so your images stay on your device.
Can I convert WebP to PNG instead?
Yes. Choose PNG in the format buttons above the images. PNG keeps transparency and every pixel, but the files are larger.
