Frequently asked questions
Why use WebP on a website?
WebP files are typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at similar quality, and much smaller than PNG for graphics with transparency. Lighter images load faster and help your page speed scores.
Do all browsers support WebP?
Yes, all current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP. Some desktop apps and older email clients may not, so keep a JPG copy if you send images by email.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. WebP supports transparency, so PNG logos and cut-out images keep their see-through areas.
Lossy or lossless WebP?
Lossy (the default) gives the smallest files and is right for photos. Lossless keeps every pixel exactly, which suits logos, icons and screenshots with text.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The WebP files are created in your browser with libwebp compiled to WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device.
