Frequently asked questions
Which format should I choose?
JPG for photos you want to open or share anywhere. PNG for screenshots, logos and graphics that need exact pixels or transparency. WebP for websites: smaller than both, with transparency. AVIF for the smallest files, if the place you use them supports it.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Decoding and encoding run in your browser with WebAssembly, so your images never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.
Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos?
Yes. HEIC photos are decoded on your device with libheif, an open source library under the LGPL licence, and turned into JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Their orientation is kept.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency. JPG can’t store it, so transparent areas are filled with a background color you choose, white by default.
Is the photo’s metadata kept?
No. Converted images contain only the picture: camera details, dates and GPS location are left out. The orientation is applied to the pixels, so photos still appear the right way up.
Does it work with animated GIFs?
Only the first frame is converted. Animation isn’t kept in the output.
