Frequently asked questions
How does image compression work?
JPG, WebP and AVIF files are re-encoded with modern encoders (MozJPEG, libwebp and libavif) that leave out details your eyes barely notice. PNG files are optimized with OxiPNG, which is lossless: every pixel stays identical.
Which compression level should I pick?
Balanced suits most photos: the difference is very hard to see, and files often shrink by half or more. Use Smallest file when a size limit matters more than detail, and Best quality for photos you plan to print or edit again.
Why did my PNG barely shrink?
PNG compression here is lossless, so it can only remove waste in how the file is stored. For a much smaller file that keeps transparency, set the output format to WebP.
Can a compressed file end up bigger?
Not when the format stays the same. If an image is already well compressed and the new version would be larger, the tool keeps your original file and tells you so.
Are my photos sent to a server?
No. Compression runs inside your browser, so your photos stay on your device. The compressed copies also leave out hidden data such as the GPS location.
Can I also reduce the dimensions?
Yes. In the settings, tick “Also reduce the dimensions” and set the longest side, for example 2560 pixels. Smaller images are never enlarged.
