Frequently asked questions
What are invisible characters?
Some characters take up no visible space but can break searches, forms or code: zero-width spaces, byte order marks, soft hyphens and control characters. They often sneak in when you copy from web pages or documents. The joiners used in emoji and in scripts such as Persian or Hindi are kept, because removing them would change the text.
How do I fix text copied from a PDF?
Text copied from a PDF often has a line break at the end of every line. Tick “Join lines broken inside a paragraph”: lines are joined back into paragraphs, words split by a hyphen at the end of a line are rejoined, and blank lines between paragraphs are kept.
Is HTML code executed when I convert it?
No. The HTML is read as plain text: tags, scripts and styles are removed, paragraphs and list items become lines, and entities such as & are turned into normal characters. Nothing in it runs or loads.
What is the difference between straight and curly quotes?
Straight quotes (" and ') are the plain characters on a keyboard, best for code and data. Curly quotes (“ ” ‘ ’) are the typographic version used in books and articles. You can convert in either direction; only one of the two options can be on at a time.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. All the cleaning happens in your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored.
