Frequently asked questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default since iOS 11. It stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG, but Windows, many Android phones and lots of websites still can’t open it without extra software.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The HEIC files are decoded inside your browser with libheif, an open source library under the LGPL licence, and the JPG files are created on your device. Your photos are never sent to a server.
Will the JPG look as good as the original?
At the default quality of 85, the difference is very hard to see. Move the quality up to 95 if you plan to print or edit the photos, or down to make the files smaller for email.
Is the location and camera data kept?
No. The JPG contains only the picture: GPS location, dates and camera details are left out. The orientation is applied to the pixels, so photos still appear the right way up.
How can my iPhone save JPG directly?
Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay in HEIC, which is what this converter is for.
