How it works
-
Press Record
Allow the microphone the first time. The waveform moves as you speak, so you can see that the sound is coming through.
-
Pause, resume, stop
Pause as often as you need, then press Stop. Each recording joins the list, where you can listen to it and rename it.
-
Save what you want to keep
Download each recording as MP3, WAV or in its original format, or share it from your phone. Nothing is kept once you close the page.
Frequently asked questions
Is my recording sent to a server?
No. The sound goes from your microphone into your browser’s memory, and conversion to MP3 or WAV happens on your device too. Nothing is uploaded, and your recordings are gone as soon as you close the page. The only copy ever stored is one you send to Transcribe: it waits in your browser’s storage, on this device, until the transcription page takes it.
Which format should I choose?
MP3 plays everywhere and stays small, so it’s the safest choice for sharing. WAV is uncompressed, which suits editing software. The original format, WebM or M4A depending on your browser, is ready instantly and is the smallest, but some older apps can’t open WebM files.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in Safari on iPhone and iPad (iOS 14.3 or later) and in Chrome on Android. Keep the page open while you record: if the screen locks or you switch apps, your phone may cut the microphone. The tool keeps the screen on while it records.
Is there a time limit?
There’s no set limit. Recordings stay in your browser’s memory, so very long sessions of several hours depend on your device. Download long recordings as soon as you finish.
Why does the MP3 format download something?
MP3 files are encoded by FFmpeg, which runs inside your browser. Its engine, about 31 MB, is downloaded only once, after asking you, then kept on your device. The original and WAV formats need no download at all.
Can I turn a recording into text?
Yes. Press Transcribe next to a recording: our audio transcription tool, which also works on your device, opens in a new tab with the recording ready. It’s handed over through your browser’s own storage and deleted from there as soon as the transcription page takes it. If that page never opens, the copy is deleted the next time you open either tool.
