Frequently asked questions
Is my audio uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly version of FFmpeg. Your file stays on your device.
Which format should I choose?
MP3 for compatibility with everything, M4A for Apple devices and slightly smaller files, OGG for games and web projects, WAV for editing software, and FLAC to archive music without any loss in a smaller file than WAV.
Does converting MP3 to WAV or FLAC improve the quality?
No. A lossless format keeps exactly what the original contains, but it can’t bring back details an MP3 already removed. The file just gets bigger.
Can I convert the sound of a video?
Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video and the tool converts its first audio track to the format you choose.
Are tags such as the title and artist kept?
Common tags are usually carried over when the new format supports them. Album artwork is not kept.
Which open-source software does this tool use?
It uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly by the ffmpeg.wasm project, with the LAME (MP3) and Vorbis (OGG) encoders. Its core is licensed under the GPL, and its full source code is available from that project.
