Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The sound is extracted inside your browser with a WebAssembly version of FFmpeg. Your video stays on your device.
Which bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps sounds good for speech and most music. Choose 256 or 320 kbps for music you care about, or 128 kbps for the smallest file, such as a recorded talk.
Does it work with audio files too?
Yes. You can also drop an audio file, such as a WAV or M4A, to turn it into an MP3. For other audio formats, use the audio converter.
What if the video has several audio tracks?
The tool extracts the first audio track, which is usually the main language or the original mix.
Can I use the MP3 of any video?
Only extract the sound of videos you own or have permission to use. Music and films are usually protected by copyright.
Which open-source software does this tool use?
It uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly by the ffmpeg.wasm project, with the LAME MP3 encoder. Its core is licensed under the GPL, and its full source code is available from that project.
