Frequently asked questions
What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link, such as utm_source=newsletter. When someone clicks the link, analytics tools like Google Analytics read these tags to tell you where the visit came from.
Which parameters are required?
Only the source is strictly required. In practice, always add a medium and a campaign name as well: together, these three make your reports easy to read. Term and content are optional.
Should I use lowercase?
Yes. UTM values are case-sensitive, so “Facebook” and “facebook” show up as two different sources. Using lowercase everywhere avoids split reports.
Will UTM parameters affect my SEO?
No, as long as you use tagged links for campaigns and not for links within your own website. For internal links, use plain addresses, otherwise visits get reattributed and your data becomes misleading.
Where is my link history stored?
Only in your browser, on this device. It isn’t sent anywhere, and you can clear it at any time.
