Frequently asked questions
How long should a title be for Google?
Google doesn’t count characters, it cuts titles by width: about 600 pixels on desktop. That’s usually 50 to 60 characters, fewer if you use wide letters like “W” or capitals. This tool measures the real width of your text in the font Google uses.
How long should a meta description be?
On desktop, descriptions are usually cut at around 920 pixels, which is roughly 150 to 160 characters. Put the most important information first, so that it stays visible even when the text is shortened.
Will Google always show my title and description?
Not always. Google may rewrite a title or pick a different snippet from your page when it thinks it matches the search better. A clear, accurate title and description make that less likely.
Is the preview exact?
It’s a close estimate. The text is measured with your browser in Arial, the font Google results use, but Google changes its layout from time to time and the cut can vary by a few characters.
Why does the mobile preview show more of my title?
On phones, Google can wrap titles over two lines and descriptions over several, so the limits are different. Checking both views makes sure your message works everywhere.
