Frequently asked questions
What counts as a broken link?
A link whose address answers with an error, such as 404 (page not found), 410 (gone) or 500 (server error), or a website that can’t be reached at all. Redirected links work, but it’s better to point straight to the final address.
Why does this tool need your server?
Browsers don’t let a web page test links on other websites. Our server does it for you and sends back only each link’s status. We don’t keep the page, the links or the results.
Why are some links marked “Not checked”?
For security, we never visit addresses on private or local networks, or on unusual ports. Email, phone and JavaScript links are skipped too, as they aren’t web pages.
How many links can I check?
Up to 100 links per page, which covers most pages. Links are checked in small groups, and you can stop at any time.
A link works in my browser but shows as broken here. Why?
Some websites block automated visitors, or show different content to logged-in users. If a link works for you, it may be one of those sites. You can still double-check it by opening it.
