How it works
-
Enter the price and the discount
Type the price on the label and the discount in percent, or tap one of the common discounts.
-
Stack extra discounts
Add a second or a third discount, such as an extra 10 % at the checkout. Each one applies to the price already reduced.
-
Work backwards
Find the original price from a sale price, or the percentage off between an old and a new price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For 20 % off 80: 80 × 0.8 = 64, so you pay 64 and save 16.
Why don’t 20 % and then 10 % make 30 %?
Because the second discount applies to the price already reduced. On a price of 100, 20 % off gives 80, then 10 % off 80 gives 72. In total you save 28, that is 28 %. The formula is 1 − (1 − 0.20) × (1 − 0.10) = 0.28.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A price of 64 after 20 % off was 64 ÷ 0.8 = 80 before the discount. Adding 20 % to 64 would give 76.80, which is not the original price.
How do I work out the percentage off between two prices?
Divide the new price by the old one, subtract the result from 1 and multiply by 100. From 80 to 60: 1 − 60 ÷ 80 = 0.25, so 25 % off.
Does the order of the discounts matter?
No. The discounts multiply, so 20 % then 10 % gives the same final price as 10 % then 20 %. Only the amount taken off at each step changes.
Are taxes included?
The discounts apply to the price you type: if it includes VAT or sales tax, so does the result. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
