Frequently asked questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
From the euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank. They are updated once a day on working days, usually around 16:00 Central European Time. The date of the rates is always shown.
Why is my bank’s rate different?
Reference rates are a snapshot of the market, without any margin. Banks and card providers add their own margin and fees, so the amount you actually pay or receive is usually a little lower.
Which currencies are available?
The euro and the currencies published by the European Central Bank, around 30 in total, including the US dollar, the pound sterling, the Japanese yen, the Swiss franc, the Indian rupee and the Chinese yuan.
How is a conversion between two non-euro currencies calculated?
Through the euro. For example, US dollars to yen uses the dollar and yen rates against the euro. This is the usual way to get cross rates from euro reference rates.
Are the rates updated at weekends?
No. The European Central Bank doesn’t publish rates at weekends or on its public holidays, so the last published rates are used until the next working day.
