Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is read and analyzed by your browser, on your device. It’s never sent to a server, so you can safely use private photos or unreleased designs.
How are the main colors chosen?
The tool groups similar pixels with a clustering method called k-means, working in a color space that matches human vision (OKLab). Each group becomes one color of the palette, and its share shows how much of the image it covers.
Why doesn’t the palette include a tiny bright detail?
The palette focuses on colors that cover a meaningful part of the image. A small detail can be absorbed into a nearby color. Increase the number of colors, or click the detail on the image to pick its exact color.
Are transparent areas taken into account?
No. Transparent and mostly transparent pixels, such as the background of a PNG logo, are ignored so they don’t skew the palette.
Which image formats are supported?
Any format your browser can display: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP everywhere, and AVIF in recent browsers. For HEIC photos from an iPhone, convert them to JPG first.
